The fashion industry is one of the largest contributors to environmental pollution and waste. According to the
World Economic Forum, the fashion industry is responsible for producing 92 million tons of textile waste. The fast fashion business model also recognised as the linear model of production is built on the concept of producing a high volume of clothing at very low cost which negatively impacts the environment and often involves many human right breaches.
However, implementing a takeback is a good step towards becoming more circular. Taking responsibility for what you produce is necessary to combat the consequences of the linear system. Once a brand takes back its old products from customers, it reduces the amount of textile waste that would otherwise end up in landfills. By reselling these products to people who enjoy buying second-hand items and support circularity, the life cycle of these items is extended. This means the brand doesn’t have to produce new items as often, saving resources and keeping its income steady. This shift towards a more sustainable model is crucial for the fashion industry to become more responsible and protect both the environment and human rights
